Ask ThinkOut about your company's money, straight from Claude or ChatGPT

Connect your AI assistant to ThinkOut for business insights

Written by Sorina Miron

You can connect your ThinkOut account to an AI assistant and ask it about your finances the way you would ask the colleague who handles analysis. You type the question in your own words, and the assistant answers with figures computed by ThinkOut.

No reports to export, no filters to set. Just the question.

What this looks like in practice

A few things you can find out in a single question:

  • "What's my balance right now, across all accounts?" - your cash position, this second.

  • "Which clients paid me less this year than last year?" - the relationships that have cooled, without comparing two years by hand.

  • "What's the most expensive tool subscription I'm paying for?" - the recurring costs that are easy to forget.

  • "Why did my balance drop in June?" - the explanation behind a month that looks odd.

The assistant reads your ThinkOut data: balances, transactions, counterparties, categories, labels.

Before you start

You need two things:

  1. Your ThinkOut account - the same one you use in the app. Nothing to copy, no extra passwords.

  2. A Claude or ChatGPT account. Other assistants work too, but these are the two most of our customers use.

Working from the terminal? Claude Code, Codex and Gemini CLI connect as well. The steps are in the developer documentation.

Connecting ThinkOut to Claude

  1. In Claude, go to CustomizeConnectorsAdd custom connector.

  2. Name it ThinkOut and enter https://mcp.thinkout.io

  3. Turn on sign-in and save.

  4. Authorise with your ThinkOut account. That's it.

Connecting ThinkOut to ChatGPT

  1. In Settings, turn on developer mode.

  2. Create a new connector pointing to https://mcp.thinkout.io

  3. Complete the ThinkOut sign-in when prompted.

One connection covers every workspace you have in ThinkOut. If you only have one, the assistant gets straight to work. If you have several, name the one you want in your question, or it will ask you once, and remember from then on.

Your first question

Once the connection is live, try this: What's my balance right now, and how did it move over the last six months?

You should get a table with the figures, the period covered and the currency. The period and currency always come first, so you can check what the assistant understood before you rely on the numbers.

Write your questions the way you'd say them out loud: "total inflows from the first of April until today", "results for last semester", "this September against last September". Don't worry about typos or missing diacritics, the assistant handles them.

What you can ask

Here are some questions grouped by what you're trying to find out. They're examples, so phrase anything you like in your own words.

Cash on hand, right now

  • "What's my total cash position across every connected account?"

  • "Which account saw the most activity last month?"

  • "If I needed 30,000 lei tomorrow for payroll, which account would cover it?"

Clients and income

  • "What share of my income comes from my top three clients?"

  • "When did Client X last pay us, and how often do they pay?"

  • "Is any regular client paying more slowly than they used to?"

Costs and suppliers

  • "Top five suppliers this quarter."

  • "Which supplier cost has grown the most against last year, in percentage terms?"

  • "Which suppliers do I pay fastest, and which ones do I keep putting off?"

Keeping your data tidy

  • "Which transactions are still uncategorised? Show me the list, not just the total."

  • "How much have I spent on [label] in total since the project started?"

  • "Which spending category grew the most as a share of total costs this year?"

Taxes

  • "How much have I paid so far this year in taxes and contributions?"

  • "How does my tax burden compare with last year's, as a share of income?"

Where the numbers come from

The assistant doesn't add up transactions itself. Every result is computed by ThinkOut, using exactly the same rules as the cash flow screen in the app:

  • transfers between your own accounts are excluded

  • excluded movements and duplicates are left out

  • split payments are counted once

  • foreign-currency transactions are converted at the rate on the movement date

Which means you can always check: a figure in the conversation and the same figure in the app will match.

What the assistant can't do

Worth knowing up front, so you don't waste time:

  • It can't change anything. The connection is read-only. No edits, no categorising, no payments.

  • It can't see forecasts, budgets or scenarios. For now it works with what has happened, not with what you've planned.

  • It can't see invoices, contracts or headcount. It works from money that has actually moved through your accounts. So for a question like "how many days pass between invoicing and being paid", you'll need to give it the missing piece yourself.

  • Answers about projects are only as good as your labels. If transactions aren't classified in ThinkOut, the assistant has no way of knowing either.

Managing the connection

Every assistant you've connected shows up in ThinkOut under My accountConnected apps, with the workspace it reached and when it was last used. You can disconnect it there at any time.

Disconnecting takes effect within an hour, or immediately on the next question that requires signing in again. And if you lose your role in a workspace, access is removed automatically.

Frequently asked questions

Can the assistant change anything in my ThinkOut account? No. The connection is read-only. It can't edit transactions, categorise them, or make payments.

I have several companies in ThinkOut. Do I need to connect more than once? No. One connection covers every workspace your account can reach. Name the one you want in your question — or the assistant will ask, and then remember for the rest of the conversation.

Are the figures in the chat the same as the ones in the app? Yes. They're computed by ThinkOut, with the same rules as the cash flow screen. It's worth checking once at the start, so you can trust them afterwards.

How long does the connection stay active? Thirty days without use. As long as you keep using it, it renews itself.

Why am I only seeing fifty transactions? Long lists arrive in batches. Ask for the next page and carry on.

It asked whether I meant a client or a label. Why? Because the name matched both. The assistant would rather ask than guess — and that's a good thing.

Need a hand?

If you get stuck connecting, or an answer doesn't look right, write to us at support@thinkout.io. It helps a lot if you tell us what you asked and what came back.

The full technical documentation, for anyone who wants the details, lives at developers.thinkout.io.
